In 1990, after watching a television show on glass blowing, I decided to take a class in Asheville, North Carolina. Following those three days, I came back excited and determined to build my own studio. A few years and many paychecks later, I created that studio right beside my home in Hartsville, SC. The year 2015 marked my ninth year blowing glass. My wife Meaghan Gann and I continue to add new skills and refine our technique each year. These improvements are the result of hours of additional experience and the classes we have taken over the years.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of working with glass is the challenge it presents. Glass blowing requires working with temperatures above 2000°F and using basic hand tools to shape the glass. The process demands your complete attention so there’s no room for thinking about day-to-day problems or my day job with Duke Energy. Quite simply, there is a sufficient variety of shapes, colors and techniques to keep us busy and happy.
