Alvin Glen shares, “Art for me, is about the fundamental elements of picture making, composition, color, surface, and texture. As well, art is about how form is described and how images are perceived. This may compel viewers to make personal interpretations.” Through my work, I would like the viewer to engage fundamental questions of existence which may include self-worth, mortality, sexuality and or spirituality. These questions may cause one to wonder what it is like to be in this world, but not of this world. These feelings of exclusion may cause each of us to gauge how we perceive ourselves relative to our daily experiences. Mixed media drawings, soft pastels, lithography, and traditional drawings all provide me a platform to espouse my interpretation of humankind’s struggle to cope with day-to-day existence.
I have received top awards in several SC exhibits, and was chosen as the official artist of the "MOJA" arts festival in Charleston, SC. I currently am a middle (Harleyville-Ridgeville) and high (Woodland) school visual arts instructor in Dorchester School District Four. I have been Teacher of the Year, and have been the featured speaker at school functions. I also teach Sunday school, and am my district's Men's Ministry leader.
Art helps open doors for me to have meaningful conversations with diverse audiences in a variety of venues.
