Carla Johannesmeyer was raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where she began her love affair with the arts. She graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech where she also studied drawing, printmaking, photography and animated film. She pursued her career as an architect with the U.S. Navy, leading and educating design and construction teams across the nation. Over the past decade, her background in architecture and design combined with her love of the arts, her personal artistic narrative, and a keen eye for composition, light and color has led her to express herself in oils. Her work reflects a continual process of learning and application within a broad range of subjects from figurative and architectural works to her rich wildscapes and rural studies. Her work is influenced by a curiosity for finding connections and relationships between seemingly unrelated subjects and channeling that curiosity to the viewer. Her work can be described as having a lyrical quality to it where fleeting impressions of light and shadow eclipse to perception.
She has received numerous awards and recognition for her work. She is an exhibiting artist in the annual Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition, Courtyard Art Gallery, Charleston Art Brokers, and the Charleston Artist Guild in Charleston SC and her work has been selected for numerous regional exhibitions. Her work is collected throughout the US and beyond.
