Kirkland Smith draws from her love of realism and portraiture to create 3-Dimensional “paintings” which deliver the important message of environmental responsibility in an evocative way. To portray the problem of overconsumption and its effects in a disposable society, she has chosen to use everyday household objects as her medium, rather than the subject of her work. By engaging the viewer with artwork that is both assessable and nostalgic, Kirkland hopes to challenge consumer habits and attitudes, and to drive home the message that we throw away says a lot about who we are, but what we choose to cherish and protect says more in the end.
Kirkland has shown in juried shows and won several awards, including the People’s Choice Award at ArtFields in 2013, the Southeast’s largest art competition. Her assemblage work can be found in public collections in SC, including the Greenville Children’s Museum, The Inn at the Crossroads, Lake City, SC, SC Department of Commerce, USC School of Journalism and Mass Communications, and the SC Governor’s School for the Arts, Greenville.
Kirkland was born in Charleston, SC and received her BA in Studio Arts from the University of SC. She has studied classical painting and drawing at Studio Escalier, in Argenton, France. She is a resident artist at Vista Studios and teaches classical painting and drawing. Kirkland lives in Columbia, SC with her husband and four children.
