Mitchell Arrants took up sawmilling as a hobby several years ago with the intent to utilize storm damaged or diseased trees. At first he milled standard lumber 2 x 4's or 2 x 6's-common stuff that can be found at any Lowe's or Home Depot. He began to notice that many logs had character, defects, knots or unusual wood grain patterns that made them truly unique. At that point, he realized that he had a new hobby and that some logs should become something more than standard 2 x 4's, so he began to mill wide live edge slabs. As the slabs dried, he studied their appearances, shapes and size to learn how they naturally fit together to become visually appealing simple furniture. It's still a learning process for him that he enjoys.
