Karen Edgar is a contemporary charcoal and black pastel portrait artist. Born and raised in the Carolinas, she was influenced by art and music throughout her youth, and they have always been an integral part of her life. Self-taught, and constantly experimenting with different arts and crafts, her professional career began in 1994 when she developed an exclusive aesthetic technique, originally inspired by the early era of black and white photography.
Edgar's rare perspective provokes vivid and emotional responses, depicting subjects she viscerally connects with and which offer a commonality of emotion and insight to all who see her work. Her catalogue includes individuals and subject matter from all walks of life, capturing intimate moments of vulnerability, joy, pain, sorrow, and beauty that connect all those who journey through life's paths. It is characterized by extreme realism, incredible shading and depth, and bold compositions.
Over the course of her 22-year career, Edgar has won prestigious awards in local, regional, national and international juried exhibitions, including the Daniel Smith International Faces and Places Contest. Her work has been exhibited in the Salmagundi Club in New York, NY, Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Collector's Cafe' in Myrtle Beach, SC, and numerous other venues. The artwork has been featured in several publications and television shows, and resides in countless private residences. Karen now lives and works in Myrtle Beach, SC.
