Joe Helms was born in 1967 in Prince George County, Maryland. His family moved around the country and Joe’s early experiences spanned from the beautiful scenery of Hawaii, adventures in the California desert, and the cultured bay scenery of Maryland. During the years at school Joe discovered his passion for art and developed his painting skills. While in high school, he participated in the Maryland Gifted and Talented Program and received the National Academy Achievement Award for Art. While still in high school, he attended classes at Maryland College of Art and Design. In 1990, he graduated from Maryland Institute College or Art with a Bachelor's of Fine Art in Painting. While at MICA, Joe was surrounded by inspiring friends and faculty and he developed lasting relationships that shaped his future path as a painter. One of the first commissions after graduating was a reproduction of Michelangelo Sistine Chapel mural on the ceiling of Mt. Royal Tavern, one of the landmarks of the local art community.
For over 20 years Joe was a freelance mural artist, commissioned by museums, hospitals, restaurants and various commercial developers and designers. Joe produced a myriad of murals and custom canvas pieces that are showcased across the United States. At the same time, Joe continued to produce and exhibit his personal fine art paintings. In 2010 Joe, now married and raising three boys, moved to Fort Mill, SC, to be closer to his large family.
