Shelby Scattergood is a 22-year-old artist based in Cary, NC. She is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received her BFA in Drawing and Printmaking (summa cum laude). Shelby specializes in hyper-realistic colored pencil portraits. Her work focuses on her own struggles with both physical and mental illness. Since being diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis and Fibromyalgia at 16, she has turned to art as a coping mechanism. Her piece Blind Faith was her first work with this subject and was displayed at ArtFields 2014. Later in college, Shelby was diagnosed with depression and later Binge Eating Disorder. Her piece Behind Bars dealt with her depression shortly after her diagnosis and exhibited at ArtFields in 2015. Today, Shelby is beginning her first major series of work post-undergrad that will deal with Binge Eating Disorder and attempt to bring to light the realities of this misunderstood illness.
