Luke Sarmiento, a Florence native and current high school senior at the Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, is a firm believer of ambition. The desire to make art is more important to him than the actual artmaking practice. All the possibilities of constructing theories, interpretations, and concepts are based from his fascination with human connectivity through the Asian-American experience. To be able to pursue art in the matter of critical investigation of people and culture is what’s significant throughout his work; his projects consist of the combination of painting and sculpture. Luke works through oil paint to translate elements from memory, place, and time to a depiction of a figure or a spontaneous happening taken from direct observation. The augmentation of transient social or personal scenes stem from his social encounters, youth in America today, a sublime moment in the presence of human connection, or the intersections of time and presence. He develops mixed media projects that combine painting and typology into a site-specific art form; the utilization of assembled and manipulated objects to define space, rhythm, color, and texture provide a sense of relational interaction with viewers. His sculptures align with political and societal investigations taken from his life in context.
