Louisville, KY
Brent Dedas was born in Louisville and has lived and worked in New York, Nashville and Toledo. Brent is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Western Kentucky University. He received his Masters of Fine Arts degree along with a Museum Studies Curatorial Certificate from the College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning, at the University of Cincinnati. His Bachelor of Fine Arts is from the University of Louisville.
Dedas’s artwork often explores the connection between science and art. Childhood memories of walking around on his father’s construction sites have deeply influenced his concepts of building and destroying. The artwork Dedas creates employs processes, which express a duality of both construction and destruction.
He utilizes non traditional mark-making techniques that collaborate with time and reactivity. The artwork itself is usually the outcome of an ongoing experiment. His work over the last 20 years has been centered on natural processes, reactions (sometimes chemical), and the breakdown of systems. His artistic intent is to allow for a loss of control. His belief is that, by engaging materials that have a voice of their own, an interesting visual conversation can ensue.
