Scott Crockett is a completely self-taught artist in Alabama. He has never taken any formal art courses except two elective classes in his sophomore year of college. He first picked up the pencil to make an outline rendering of his painting. Scott found that he was much more pleased with his rendering on canvas before painting over them. He understood that graphite and charcoal drawing has been known as a less popular medium for artistic pursuits and would not yield as much attention or gallery acceptance based on the preconceived notions of what sells in the art market. While his experimental paintings have taken anywhere from 10 to 20 hours, his drawings have taken an average of 15 to 20 times that amount of time to complete a drawing. Currently he has spent over 1000 hours on a single drawing and doesn't plan to "speed up" his process. While everyone in the world is trying to cut corners and spend less time on the results that they want, Scott has learned that in life anything worth having is worth working hard and long hours for. The saying "time is precious" is an evaluation of where one's devotion is spent. Scott knows that pursuing his passion in graphite and charcoal drawing is much more important for personal and professional growth rather than bending to change his pursuits in order to satisfy market trends or gallery acceptance. Scott is privileged to have artwork accepted for his 3rd consecutive annual ArtFields competition.
