Mount Pleasant, SC
Micheline Callicott was born into an US Air Force family which meant frequent moves-from a childhood in Tucson, AZ, to a young adulthood in Europe and the United Kingdom where she attended Richmond College, the American University in London. She graduated with a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in photography.
After graduating she continued working in the field as a photographer's assistant and later, as a photojournalist. Her work experiences at a daily paper in a small South Carolina town were incredibly varied. She covered Hurricane Hugo, Gulf War veterans, traffic fatalities, murder scenes, the President of the United States, fires, and, once a year, debutantes.
She is currently a high school art educator, teaching her students how to read the visual world and create imagery to be read. She also teaches them black and white film photography and never tires of witnessing their awe as their first images appear in a tray of developer.
Photography has been a part of Micheline's life for as long as she can remember. To her the medium is like alchemy whether it is composed of silver halide crystals or pixels. She is endlessly fascinated with the way using a camera presents an opportunity to learn something new or to as a means to absorb the incomprehensible--and every once in a while to record the sublime.
She lives in North Charleston, SC, and has a son, Theo.
