Charlotte, NC
Kathie Roig was born and raised in Ohio. She began weaving in 1980 after graduating from Otterbein University with a BA in Visual Arts. Working as an assistant to a professional weaver for several years provided her with a strong foundation to pursue selling her own handwoven clothing.
After a workshop with master weaver/educator, Bhakti Ziek in 2000, the focus of her weaving shifted from clothing to weavings for the wall. She explored pushing the limits of the woven grid. Her loom (a drawloom) allows her the freedom of weaving designs what can be drawn on graph paper. She also developed a process of painting the warp before it was put on the loom.
In 2006, she moved to western North Carolina where she was surrounded by mountains and weaving traditions. Her weavings reflected those influences in design and color. At the same time, she began to weave functional items for home and family, such as placemats, napkins, towels, and baby blankets and bibs.
She moved to Charlotte, NC, in 2015, where she works in her home studio as well as a shared workspace with other artists. Her weavings now, more than ever, are a response to time and place.
Roig’s weavings have been exhibited throughout the United States in various venues and the recipient of many awards including, Complex Weavers Award for Excellence in Complex Weaving. The North Carolina Cancer Center in Chapel Hill commissioned a weaving, “Mountain View, Four Seasons”.
She has lectured and taught at various weaving guilds and the John C. Campbell Folk School.
