Dorothy Montgomery is a fabric chronicler, lecturer, educator, musician, author, and storyteller. She centers her special quilting interest by sharing the influences of the Gullahs, African American music makers, and sung and unsung women quilters. She has quilted nearly 100 quilts. Her quilts have been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. The quilts have been featured in several one-woman art shows. The quilts garner invitations to many public forums. They include: lecturing at churches, colleges, libraries, the state fair; speaking to social and civic organizations, at academic conferences, National Park Service sites, high schools, colleges, and quilting clubs; storytelling at elementary schools, art and senior citizens centers, holding workshops for college credits; presenting residences for elementary and high school students.
Montgomery graduated from Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, NC; the University of Georgia, Athens, GA; the College of Charleston, Charleston, SC; and Trident Technical College, Charleston, SC.
She authored and published, “A Legacy of Twelve,” a book of poetry, essays, and stories that explain the various genres of popular African American music.
