Nancy Marshall was born Marietta, GA. She began her photography career in 1972 with a one year internship in the photography department of Governor Jimmy Carter. From 1973 -1976 she served as Georgia Public Television still photographer. In 1977, she joined Nexus, an Atlanta photography cooperative gallery and joined the gallery staff. Nexus later became the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center.
She was a fellow of the Ossabaw Island Genesis Project in 1979 and 1980. Nancy published monograph “Ossabaw” with Nexus Press 1982.
In 1988, she was awarded a Southern Arts Federation Fellowship for photography. Nancy began teaching photography at Emory University in the Visual Arts Program and served as Senior Lecturer until 2005. She moved to Charleston area in 2005 and was part of the College of Charleston adjunct faculty 2010 and 2011. In 2015, she received a Hambidge Center Fellowship.
