Mike Mahon began doing ceramics his senior year of High School and became fixated with manifesting his ideas through clay since first contact. After graduation, he would make pieces at home and his old art teacher would let him sneak in and use the school's kiln. However, it wasn't until he found an old kick-wheel at an abandoned summer camp that his love pottery really took root.
The wheel had been beat up by years of people vandalizing the property so he decided to give it a new home, and with the help of his father we brought it back to life. Shortly after that his family relocated to Murrells Inlet, SC. In a strange place with no friends, he became immersed in his pottery wheel. He found a kiln on craigslist and began building his own studio in the garage.
After months of practicing and stockpiling pieces, he began vending at street fairs and art festivals to make his material money back, in order to continue and expand his studio practice. He continued full time vending for almost three years until I decided to go back to school to further my education. Mike is currently working on his Associates in Science, while still pursuing ceramics.
His love for clay runs deep and he often enjoys the process more than the finished piece. A lot of his work has "random" yet intricate geometric patterns, which aren't preconceived and come to life as he works through each piece.
