Katherine Nix is a recent graduate of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing and Sculpture. As a young emerging artist, she hopes to continue my studio practice in grad school this coming fall after a much-needed academic break.
Her work is an exploration of material, form, and texture, often taking inspiration from natural forms. As an artist, she is drawn to "organic" aesthetics and the relationship between those aesthetics and the fabrication of her work. Her work aims to re-contextualize its subject matter through repetition, displacement, and re-construction.
As an artist, she relies heavily on process and physical contact with her work. The ability to touch and feel her materials as she works with them has a heavy influence on how she views the final piece. She has a fascination with tools, and how their use as an extension of the body contributes to the creation of work. Every piece is an exploration of her body and its relationship to materials and tools through the creation process, regardless of subject matter.
