Deborah Kern has primarily been considered a New York City artist after earning her BFA in painting from Parsons School of Design in 1991.
She spent the next two decades living and painting in New York, Mexico, Southeast Asia, and the Greek Islands to expand her vision and work, honing in on her signature style of highly charged dreamlike and gothic content with spidery swirling lines, jarring acidic colors which contrast sharply with large dark or stark white, multi-faceted empty spaces.
In the paintings there are always women, and often babies, and tree roots and twisting flowers and tumultuous waters and hungry fish and floating hippos who stare at the viewer: daring, beseeching, melting, growing, entangling, holding, loving, and birthing each other and all those who are willing to enter.
The work is a content driven exploration of the ever changing self as well as a means to see things as the artist desires to view them or perhaps really are.
The artist has exhibited in many group shows throughout New York City with the Organization of Independent Artists, as well as the Astoria Artists Coalition, and the Montserrat Gallery in Soho. More recently her work has been seen at a variety of group shows and juried competitions in Charlotte, NC, in spaces such as the Hart-Witzen Gallery, Charlotte Art League, and the Larry Elder Gallery to name a few.
Deborah currently creates exhibits, resides and teaches in Charlotte, NC, with her husband and three children.
