Considered a contemporary folk artist, Julie has spent a lifetime observing how emotion manifests in the gestures of human form; the special roles light and proximity of color play in composing a landscape; and how all of this can be used to express the deeper story. The far-reaching topography and vast sky of her Michigan roots shape the backdrop for the figures in her work.
Julie has spent the last seven years working in a studio in Asheville NC's River Arts District, where she has developed two areas of focus: story paintings that document her grandparents' life on their mid-century farm, and non-representational abstract work that studies the the soul of a simple line, and the relationship between the eye, hand, and mind as the painting unfolds.
Toggling between these abstract colored panels and nostalgic pieces, Julie’s art serves both as a working commentary on sound design and the essence of being human.
