When our loved ones die, we are often told that death is a funny thing. It also propels us to consider our own mortality, and what will become of us when our time in the sun finally comes to pass--death holds every person captive with the simple idea of being nothing in the end. In order to demonstrate the concept of someone finally finding peace with this, I used charcoal, colored pencils, and blending mediums to portray a skeletal man wearing a clown suit, effectively 'bringing light' with a candle to the confirmation of his own death. The broad strokes of white remind him of the light he will soon leave for the shadows of nothingness clinging to his skull. While faced with his terrible fate, he allows simple words as a mantra to provide comfort and guide him to the grave--words borrowed from an old Latin saying. From 'Memento mori' is derived his own reminder: 'Memento, mors res ridicula est'. Or, 'Remember, death is a funny thing.'
