In an era of increasing technology, we face the environmental horror of forced obsolescence. We excessively pile perfectly usable technology into landfills because it's 'out of style,' or so say the influential. Then only a few years later we yearn for the nostalgia of our old tech, and the same people who pushed us towards The New reaffirm our feelings by telling us it's 'retro chic' and we scramble again to get it. While we are driven by nostalgia, those so hasty to get rid of it take the opportunity to capitalize on the human yearning for the past. It's a status symbol to have the newest tech, but at the same time, it is a status symbol to have an imitation of the past. My interest in historical fashion inspired me to create "Irene", a Victorian gown, a symbol of an era similarly romanticized in film and literature, contrasting our nostalgia against an iconic piece of the Victorian era. And so, all this begs the question, Is the past romantic? Is it obsolete? Or is it unreachable?
