I took up sawmilling as a hobby several years ago with the intent to utilize storm-damaged or diseased trees. In the beginning I milled standard lumber 2 x 4’s or 2 x 6’s. Common stuff that can be found at any Lowe’s or Home Depot store. Slowly I noticed that many logs had character, defects, knots or unusual woodgrain patterns that made them truly unique. At that point I realized that I had a new hobby and that some logs should become something more than standard 2 x 4’s so I began to mill wide live edge thick slabs. As the slabs dried I studied their appearances, shapes and sizes to learn how they naturally fit together to become visually-appealing simple furniture. It’s still a learning process for me that I enjoy.
