“A Careful Deconstruction” investigates my ideas by exposing the inner working of 375 VHS tapes. This was a response to my recent unemployment, using supplies found in thrift stores and working with materials I already had. I was inspired to deconstruct them delicately taking each piece apart and organizing them into piles. I thought about every tiny piece any how they all had been assembled using the same parts but each a little different from the other. How many decisions were made and meetings held about each of those pieces? How much time, money and energy was spent on this product that now is either considered garbage or vessels for memories stacked in basements and carports. The VCR was a pretty significant invention when I was growing up. I remember going to the video store on a friday night and sitting around as a family to watch movies on weekends. I felt that these objects needed to get a visual make-over taking them from a useless object to something worthy of attention.
