Lynne Riding was born in Knighton, Wales, UK, and has lived in Charleston, SC for the past twenty three years. She holds a Masters of Fine Art-Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, a Bachelors of Art in Fashion and Textiles from Manchester College of Art, UK and an Art Foundation from Hereford School of Art & Design, UK. After her art education, Lynne lived and worked in London for a number of years, taking on various commissions whilst teaching at a central London college. On moving to Charleston, SC, she held a position as professor of studio art at the College of Charleston, for ten years. Currently a faculty member at the Art Institute of Charleston, she also continues to develop her own work and is represented locally by the Corrigan Gallery on Queen St. Charleston, SC. Gebert Contemporary, Scottsdale, AZ and Aberson Exhibits, Tulsa, OK. Riding’s work was included in the exhibit, “Abstract Art in SC, 1949-2012”, State Museum, Columbia, SC.
A childhood spent in Mid Wales instilled in Riding, a love of landscape and a certain awe for the power and fluctuations of the elements. An inveterate traveler of both land and sea, she draws on these experiences in her work. Riding’s abstract work stems from the landscape in which she finds herself, be it referential to color or form, and is concerned with issues of impermanence and human frailty.
She states: – “My interests lie in the subtle undercurrents, the not so blatant, crude or obvious. A case of paying attention to what happens between the obvious.”
