One of every sixty-eight children are diagnosed with ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder in the United States. In 2009 my son, Freddie, was diagnosed with Autism. Freddie’s absence of language, fear, and social skills have made me a courageous advocate. His absence of communication causes anxiety, tempers, and self-mutilation. Freddie will bite on his chew to regain his composure. He will run in dangerous situations. He will make awkward noises and draw unwanted attention. He can be overwhelming to people who have not been exposed to this type of behavior. I appreciate the fact that he is unable to mask his emotions. I enjoy his innocence. Freddie loves the book, “Horton Hears a Who.” This book is so fitting because a person is a person no matter how small. A person is a person no matter the mental deficit. Freddie will not make typical connections or personal relationships, but he is still part of our society. He is ONE. My quilt, titled “ONE” was pieced by hand and machine. I hand embroidered the numbers one and sixty-eight for the one of every sixty-eight children diagnosed with ASD. I hand appliquéd puzzle pieces to the background of the quilt. They are the universal symbol for Autism. The puzzle pieces reflect the mystery and complexity of the disorder. I chain stitched fabric to the quilt to represent Freddie’s chew. His chew is an important part of his person, it regulates his temperament. He has it on at all times. The chew also separates him from him.
