Laura Spong is a native of Nashville, TN. She is among South Carolina’s most prominent abstract painters and was included in Abstract Art in SC 1949 – 2012, the SC State Museum’s historic overview of abstract art. She was included in the 701 CCA SC Biennial 2017 at 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia. She will have a solo exhibition at the Sumter County (SC) Gallery of Art early 2018. Her most recent solo exhibition was a collaboration with poet Jonathan Brent Butler at Columbia’s if ART Gallery in February – March 2017.
Her career has taken off since her benchmark 80th-birthday exhibition at Gallery 80808/Vista Studios in Columbia. She has shown in solo and group exhibitions in NC, SC, GA and TN; including at the University of SC McKissick Museum and McMaster Gallery, which organized a retrospective of her work in 2006; the Burroughs and Chapin Museum in Myrtle Beach, SC; the Florence (SC) Museum, where she had a two-person exhibition with Carl Blair; the Greenville County (SC) Museum of Art; and the Spartanburg (SC) Art Museum, where she had a solo exhibition. Her work is in the collections of the Greenville Museum, the SC State Museum and the SC State Art Collection. Much of her career has been documented in three exhibition catalogues, Laura Spong at 80: Warming The Chill Wind With Celebration of 2006; Laura Spong 2006 – 2011: Age As An Administrative Device of 2011; and Laura Spong At 90: Six Decades In Paintings of 2016, all published by if ART Gallery.
