It was mid-December 2016, Second Line Sunday for the Big Nine Social Aid and Pleasure Club, based in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward. It was chilly and the forecast predicted rain - a day most clubs would cancel their second line to avoid ruining their clothes and having to trod through the cold, heavy rain with only their brass band, unaccompanied by the usual crowd of dancing secondliners. But not the Big Nine. It was drizzling when the horns first started to blow. The club members danced their way out of a bar and within minutes the storm bore down. The temperature dropped 20 degrees. The rain started pouring. The crowds, ecstatic at first, slowly fell away as they danced down St. Claude Ave. towards the Lower 9th Ward. Eventually, in that cold, relentless downpour, only the club members remained, still dancing, a line of traffic inching slowly behind them. This was taken as they danced over the St. Claude Avenue Bridge, which rises over the levee and drops you in the Lower 9th.
