A recent article in Smithsonian estimated that just after the American Civil War, one in four cowboys were African-American. Yet this population was drastically underrepresented in popular accounts. And it is still. The "cowboy" identity retains a strong presence in many contemporary black communities. "Delta Hill Riders," an ongoing documentary project in the Mississippi Delta, sheds light on an overlooked African-American subculture -- one that resists both historical and contemporary stereotypes. The work highlights black heritage rodeos; horse shows, which judge trotting performance; trail rides, which serve as outdoor social gatherings; and "Cowboy Nights" at black nightclubs across the Delta. Additionally, I've photographed in my subjects' homes and daily lives. As a white male photographer, it's an honor to be invited into this community. The project aims to press against my own old archetypes -- who could and could not be a cowboy -- while uplifting the voices of my subjects.
