BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC
I am a wood artist specializing in highly carved, textured, and colored wood vessels, sculpted from local North Carolina trees. When first observed by many people, my work often appears to be ceramic or glass, and it gives me great satisfaction to explain that everything I make is wood. My pieces start with a block of wood, or an entire log, and an idea. The basic shape I want to create is formed by either turning the wood on a lathe, or by carving by hand, with both hand and power tools, and removing wood until the external form is created. In the majority of my work, the form is then hollowed out with special tools that allow the unwanted wood to be removed. The end result is either a smooth, hollow vessel, or a purely sculptural form. At this point I now have my blank, three-dimensional canvas to transform.
