The phrase "asking for it" means that a woman somehow invites violence against herself, whether through her actions or appearance. It means that women are expected to prove their own innocence in court when they are the victims of violence. It means that they are blamed when another person assaults them.



We females are so accustomed to being physically vulnerable that we hardly notice it anymore. We are captives confined to daylight and safe neighborhoods. In my painting, I used a flower to depict female vulnerability. The feathers represent flattering clothing, makeup, and other adornment. Women are judged harshly if we do not make ourselves fashionable and attractive, yet sexual assault is often blamed on a woman's appearance. I used dewdrops, a symbol of purity, to indicate that a woman's sexuality is sacred and is hers to share with whom she chooses. She never asks for it to be taken from her by force. Perpetrators are responsible for their own actions.
