Edisto Island, SC
My art takes inspiration from my everyday interests on Edisto Island, such that the visual context varies with each work. As a beekeeper, I am fascinated by the way bees use free-form geometry in their honeycomb construction and I emulate this in certain works. As a citizen archaeologist, I admire the simple elements applied to pottery sherds such as the use of pine needles to create relief designs. I utilize a similar approach by using resources indigenous to the Lowcountry. As a backyard gardener, I gain inspiration from a variety of seed shapes and forms. My color palette is simple, dictated by the organic material I select. Working in three dimensions has always been a focus of my work. My formal art training is in ceramics which I received as a graduate student from the Newcomb Art School in New Orleans. Recently I have been experimenting with papier-mâché using my experience with ceramic hand-building techniques to create functional and non-functional forms.
