As a visual artist, I enjoy the freedom of exploring different art media; however, printmaking is my passion and the foundation of my work. I am intrigued by texture in art and work toward recreating the illusion on texture on a 2-dimensional surface. With a background in horticulture, I realized that nature itself offers an abundance source material. The diversity of black women and their historical connection with agriculture in the Southeast strongly influence my work. In my current series, "The Paper Dolls", I create portraits that depict the diversity of African American women while indiscreetly revealing traits of their personalities. My image "Conjuring" taps into the power of spiritual beliefs in black women, as well as the myths surrounding "root working". I want the viewer to feel as if they are swept up into the spell of the Conjuror.
