Raeus Jae Cannon is a fiber artist who uses knitting and pin loom weaving to create one-of-a-kind wearable art and sculpture. She uses her mother’s 1934 pin-loom to create artwork that is soft but geometric, sometimes whimsical, and colorful. Mostly self-taught, Raeus finds inspiration comes from a variety of sources: yarns, scenery, art, and even sounds.
Every project starts with a ‘palette’ of yarn swatches woven on the pin loom. Once completed, she knits separate pieces and parts that she sees in her mind. While knitting and weaving, she has very little information about the final piece. As the project to develops, more information is given.
Raeus describes her process: “Imagine driving down a busy street (while wearing a blindfold) when suddenly someone yells ‘make a U-turn now!' My projects take regular U-turns along the way." I hope my U-turns will inspire others.
