Culture is a defining part of who we are as a country, as people, and as individuals. Growing up as a part of two cultures -one I inherited and the other I acquired- has shaped how I see and experience the world. My history and heritage have defined how I create and tell my story. Through my art, I bring together my Southern Chinese heritage and my Southern American culture to tell a story that resonates with the ideals of a melted pot America. “Moon饼Pie” is a part of a large series of works (“Food Babies”) dealing with finding the parallels between Chinese and Southern American cuisine. “Moon饼Pie” depicts apron-donned babies with Moon Pies and Mooncakes. Moon Pies are a sweet pastry often associated with the South while Mooncakes are a traditional Chinese pastry eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The use of color and a parody of traditional baby motifs, bring a lighthearted and comedic touch to the piece which is furthered to near-absurdity with repetition and patterning.
