Chapel Hill, NC
Chieko Murasugi is an abstract painter and mixed media artist who was born in Tokyo, raised in Toronto, and based in San Francisco for 20 years before moving to Chapel Hill in 2012. She has degrees in Psychology (BA, PhD) and Studio Art (BFA, MFA). Murasugi uses the language of abstraction to decipher and navigate the complex and evolving socio-cultural landscapes she has traversed as a Japanese-born woman scientist-turned-artist. She has exhibited her work in galleries and museums in San Francisco, New York, and North Carolina. Her paintings reside in the public collections of the City of Raleigh and Duke University. She is a Co-founder and Co-curator of BASEMENT, a new (since 2019) artist-run project space in Chapel Hill.
