Heather Hietala explores the vessel and paddle form as metaphors for self and the journey we are all on. Her signature style blends influences from the many boats in her life and those experienced on her travels around the globe. Hietala received an MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She has shown extensively in galleries and museums nationally and internationally with pieces in private and public collections including the Racine Art Museum, WI, Asheville Art Museum, NC, Gregg Museum of Art and Design, Raleigh, NC, Agnico Eagle Gold Corporation, Toronto, ON, and the Horn Collection of Contemporary Craft, Little Rock, AK. Her work has appeared in periodicals and Real Life Journals, Sterling Publishing and 500 Handmade Books Vol 2, Sterling Publishing. Her awards include an NEA Regional Fellowship and a Tennessee Arts Commission Fellowship. She has participated in two residencies at Centrum Center for the Arts (WA). Hietala lives and works in Asheville, NC.
