Atabeira:Emanate began as a question; what do my ancestors look like? As my family originates from the Dominican Republic, our history becomes muddled after a point. Sometimes, I can see our indigenous origins in my grandmothers face, but they become lost in the Spanish qualities of my father's. My own skin might be African under certain lights, but the truths of it all remain in uncertainty. As I glued the pieces of this work together and my subjects identity began to appear, it occurred to me that it might all be true. That all the details of my family history radiate from the past in a spectrum of light. A range of color and ethnicity. The diaspora emanates from many origins. Atabeira is named after the Moon of Taino mythology.
