“My name is Jim, I am an alcoholic”, is how I introduce myself in Alcoholics Anonymous. Before I ever proudly spoke these eight words, I suffered from depression, anxiety, shame, guilt, selfishness, self-centeredness, and homelessness. As an alcoholic in recovery, I reject those sentiments and trust in hope, selflessness, and love. In maintaining a fit spiritual condition, I examine the past and present of who and where I am or was in my recovery, and transmit that through my art. By combining traditional art processes with new technology, I metaphorically recall the past of my alcoholism so I am not doomed to repeat it while embracing my evolution forward. My work challenges cultural perspective on alcoholism to expose and denounce false stigmas behind the disease of alcoholism.
