The work focuses on labor, gender, and sound in India. Here I render and record rural marginalized female laborers of two distinct industries of construction and agriculture. I am most interested in micro-level economics –the who and how of this labor force – demonstrating the daily survival of poor women in India.This social commentary is designed to make the largely invisible female laborers visible – including the head loaders,stone makers,and oyster shuckers – all of whom are a big part of the informal economy of India. I chose India as a topic, as it is a barometer and threshold for measuring various environmental impacts of water scarcity and abundance,which also provides an accessible entry point for cultural-ecological exploration.The labor narratives within these works parallel a larger story of contemporary culture and traditions in India,which bring into question the significance of art and the cultivation of geography to politics and the challenges of production to survival.
