In this work, I am addressing one of the many significant dilemmas we face as humans: how do we continue to grow as a creative, intelligent species and at the same time care for, respect, and replenish the planet? This piece was developed from inspiration drawn from two of Georgia’s State Parks— Providence Canyon (and the story of its creation by farm run-off erosion) and Indian Springs. In this piece I’ve layered photographic images of these extraordinary land formations with one of the many automobiles abandoned on the ridge of the canyon and images of Indian Springs Waterfall in a “digital piecing” to create a seamless patchwork of car parts, canyon walls, and moving water. Mingling the fluidity of water with the stillness and solidity of earth (including the objects made from minerals and metals extracted from its depths) entangles their energies and also awakens associations with earth and water contained in the mythologies and cultural histories of the world’s populations.
