On May 25, 2020 in Minneapolis, 46-year-old Black father George Floyd was murdered by a policeman, igniting nation-wide protests. Later, his daughter Gianna told then presidential candidate Joe Biden “Daddy Changed the World.” This quilted cotton fabric construction is part of a series called “Lady Corona Comforter Series,” began in spring 2020. As stay-at-home orders were being initiated because of the spreading coronavirus, I bought a sewing machine. I had recently seen a quilt show at a local museum and wondered how I might employ the innate characteristics of this familiar medium. As my competency increased, I thought about quilts as comforters, much needed at the time. I developed a comforting figure, not unlike a deity or favorite doll, calling her “Lady Corona.” She wears gloves, a face mask, and a small crown. Each work features 19 flowers (symbolic of COVID-19). In “Daddy Changed the World,” Lady Corona is represented as a Barbie-type doll echoing the child's gesture.
