Driftwood Beach is located on the northern end of Jekyll Island, Georgia. Over decades, natural erosion and saltwater made the soil unable to support tree life, some of the resulting driftwood being 200 years old. To my mind, they create haunting natural sculptures that sometimes appear to be emerging from the sand, sometimes slowly disappearing into it. Although the island is popular as a tourist destination most of the development is located on the southern and central portions. Consequently, the marshes and beaches on the northern end remain largely isolated and fortunately unspoiled.
