The "Eggbound" series is an exploration of how best to approach one of my favorite art genres, science-fiction art, in my own style and perspective. Drawing from favorite authors like Ursula K. LeGuin and artists like Zdzisław Beksiński, I began envisioning a humanoid existence without biological sex or assigned gender, in which the privilege/burden of reproduction rests with any and all individuals, and occurs through the expulsion of fertilized, bird-like eggs through normally imperceptible openings in a variety of locations on the body. My hope is to articulate an imagined reality in which considerations of power and gender may not exist (at least not in a way we might immediately understand), and in which the cycle of life and death is shared and respected equally amongst all responsible adults. My use of flowers and birds -- particularly carrion birds such as vultures -- is intended to ground these fantastical creatures in our reality and understanding of birth and grief.
