As a farmer preparing fields for planting, we change our surroundings; leaving subtle impressions behind. The dirt beneath our feet carries a hidden, softly spoken history of people and cultures. We may change the earth but the minerals remain the same; refashioned in different ages. People become ‘rooted’ to their surroundings or ‘Homes’ where they feel they belong. Just as the environment we each grow to call ‘Home’ is changed, carried like the soil in the tread of our boots, we eventually shape people and places that we interact with, transforming them over time. Furrows is a reflection of my impressions left upon others throughout life, and the many places I have called ‘Home’. Using a combination of locally sourced natural materials such as cotton and river silt from South Carolina, I create works that combine unique textures and materials. I create art that integrates my current environment and passion for uncovering beauty in the dirt between our roots.
