“Gathered Together” is intended to pay homage to Black victims of police brutality. It was motivated by the idea that the effort required to enact needed change is a responsibility that all must engage in. A handwritten list of many victims is on one side of the canvas along with the date and location of the violent event. Referencing a chart of human skin colors, swaths of painted canvas are gathered onto ropes mounted onto the back of a stretched canvas, revealing the structural reality of systemic racism. Painted cracks on the canvas suggest, optimistically, that this structure could be breaking apart. The piece is mounted on a rotating hook and is unevenly weighted, referencing the inequality and instability in our cultural fabric. Weighted power structures, fragility, the shedding of ingrained societal patterns, selfexamination, whitewashing and the necessity for seeking out the hidden and forgotten are expressed through various components incorporated in the work.
