"Get Yours Today!" is a photo project concerning race, advertising, the commercialization of gender roles, and the creation of American Icons. I wanted this series to be a critique of how women are often used as props to sell merchandise, and a lifestyle of domestication. I wanted to create a vintage style for the photos to point out a time where sexism was at its most overt in the media, as well as utilize a black model as a bit of realism for who in the 1950s would have really been using these products as homemakers and nannys. The destruction of the iron is a rejection of female domestication and the subjugation of black women to "mammy-ism" As triumphant the destruction of the iron is, I wanted the model to keep the same smile on her face as a symbol of happy corporate commercialism and how even the visual rejection of oppression is not the end of the act, and women will continue to be used as props in advertisements. But at least she got this release.
