My Father passed away in January of 2021. The absence of his presence sent my mom and me into a deep dive of remembering. We read through old letters, looked at early black and white snapshots and recalled stories. The ephemera of memory is precious when those who hold the remnants know the subjects of the letters and photos. But what happens to those remainders of history that no one claims? What happens to those memories? In a thrift store I found a black and white 1950's photograph of a young woman seated in a car. Her expression is forlorn, and she sits with clothes hanging askew on wire hangers in the back seat. Who was she and what happened to the owners of this 85 cents memory? I decided to draw her. Replicating the black and white values of the small almost forgotten art form of film photography, I drew this traveling woman on large paper as a nearly life-sized visitor to my studio. This gave her space and place to enter my world and become a new memory for all who see her.
