I originally created this piece in the Spring of 2019 right before the pandemic hit. At that point I had become all too familiar with the current epidemic of mental illness in America today. In 2015 a high school friend committed suicide, then another acquaintance in 2016, followed by my sister's best friend weeks afterwards. Mental illness, its deathly presence, and trauma seemed inescapable like the earth beneath my feet, as portrayed with the application of Georgia clay. Ever since, I've been trying to wash my hands of the multiple tragedies and my unfounded guilt that I could have stopped them. That was my original intent of the piece, but as covid has over taken the world it has become open to other relevant interpretations as we try to cleanse ourselves of a completely different epidemic.
