Having grown up in South Carolina, my family and I spent part of most summers on the coast in a tent. Anyone whose has ever driven toward the Atlantic ocean in South Carolina will know the smell of the marshland as you near the sea. The pluff mud, the reeds and the fiddler crabs combine to let you know you have reached your destination. My siblings and I never spent too much time lounging on the beach. There was too much to explore, too many coastal sea creatures to marvel at and intrude upon. The Fiddler Crabs were our favorite to pester. Watching them scamper into their sandy holes as nature covered them and kept them safe from our inquiring minds and sticky little fingers. As an adult, I thought it was high time the fiddler crabs got a little payback.
