October: Arlington County was painted with the fall sugar maple color in mind. Every year in Virginia, the leaf changes are extraordinary, but the sugar maples pierce through the foliage; a red stop-sign that Summer has ended and Autumn is in full flower. At first blush, the trees seem to be red, but examined in the October sun, the color is bright pink turning to orange, with crimson and carmine tones and copper tinges. The excitement doesn’t lend itself to deliberate meditation, but to a frenzy of color, a riot of Fall feeling with crisp apples and sweaters being the order of the day. The energy of the AbEx movement and the need to burst out of the house after the Pandemic is all present in this work.
