Elaine Kehew is a painter who lives in Virginia after a decade of painting in Kenya. Her sense of color is informed by Africa but inspired by the foliage of the rural mountains in Virginia’s Shenandoah valley. The artist grew up in her parents’ greenhouses and flower shops, and is moved by leaves, petals, flowers and trees. She studied painting at The Art League in New York City and at the Corcoran School. Kehew draws energy from the abstract expressionist movement in the 1950s and is fascinated with color, often mixing pigment with rabbit skin glue to stain the canvas before she paints.
